seeking emergency medical treatment

It's critical to know when to seek emergency help. Read the points below so you're prepared the next time you're in trouble.

Seek emergency medical treatment if:
  • It's hard to talk because of your breathing or asthma
  • Lips and fingernails turn gray or blue
  • Ribs and neck muscles show when breathing in
  • Heart rate or pulse is very fast
  • It’s hard to walk because of your breathing or asthma
  • Medicine is not helping
  • The quick-relief medicine does not help for very long or not at all, and breathing is still fast and hard after using it
  • Peak flow meter readings drop below 50% of your personal best peak flow reading
Talk to your healthcare professional about these symptoms and others that indicate you should seek emergency help.
