components of nicotine addiction

Most smokers know that nicotine is the force behind their addiction. But maybe it’s unclear why your body is so hooked to nicotine. The first step to breaking this addiction is finding out what drives it. Check out the three components of nicotine addiction below.

physical component
This is the result of the body depending on nicotine to feel good. Smoking releases the brain’s "feel good" messengers. The longer a person smokes, the harder for the body to overcome its physical addiction.

behavioral and social components
Behavioral components are the body's response to the pleasure of smoking, such as a need to do something with your hands. Social components are triggers that make you want to smoke, such as finishing a meal or driving a car.

If you smoke, talk with your healthcare professional about ways to help you stop.
